El fenómeno "Grease"

He decidido abrir una entrada para esta película musical que supuso todo un referente para la época. Si habéis visto el vídeo que he puesto al principio (que me ha parecido una mezcla maravillosa), habréis disfrutado de algunos de sus mejores temas musicales.

I have decided to create an entry to talk about this musical film which was supposed to be a referent in the period. If you have seen the previous video (which I consider it is a wonderful mixed), you would have enjoyed some of the best musical songs.

Para empezar, la película se titulaba "Grease", que en español se traduciría por "Brillantina", que supongo que tiene que ver con la sustancia que se ponían en el pelo para dejarlo brillante y pegado... De ahí que muchos de los chicos que salen en la película aparezcan peinándose el pelo grasiento (ja, ja, ja)

To begin with Grease, I suposed that the title of the film corresponds to the substance they put on their hair in order to keep it brright and fixed... That is why many of the boys in the movie appeared combing their greased hair (ja, ja, ja)

Se estrena en 1978 en España y la banda sonora está escrita por por Barry Gibb de los Bee Gees, pero interpretada por Frankie Valli:

This movie's title song, Grease,  was a hit.

Los protagonistas de la película eran Danny Zucco (John Travolta) y Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), que se conocen en la playa durante unas vacaciones, se enamoran y creen que no volverán a verse más. Pero... el primer día en el instituto Rydell High, él cuenta sus vacaciones a sus amigos de la banda T-birds  -Kenickie (Jeff Conaway), Sonny (Michael Tucci), Doodie (Barry Pearl) and Putzie (Kelly Ward) -y ella a las chicas del club de Pink Ladies -Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Frenchy (Didi Conn), Jan (Jamie Donnelly) and Marty (Dinah Manoff) - y no saben que están muy cerca uno del otro. Lo hacen en forma de canción: "Summer nights"
The main characters of the film were Danny Zucco (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), who met on the beach on  holiday, they fell in love and thought they would never see each other again. But... at the very first day at High School at Rydell, he tells his friends of the band T-birds -Kenickie (Jeff Conaway), Sonny (Michael Tucci), Doodie (Barry Pearl) and Putzie (Kelly Ward) - all about his summer adventures... and she also tells the girls of the Pink Ladies club -Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Frenchy (Didi Conn), Jan (Jamie Donnelly) and Marty (Dinah Manoff) - her summer story, without knowing they are very near... They sang their versions with "Summer Nights"

Como veis en el vídeo, las historias son muy diferentes. Sin embargo, la ropa era bastante parecida, pues ellos vestían cuero negro y ellas cuero rosa. La moda, en aquella época, sería las chaquetas de cuero y los pantalones de pitillo. El tupé, aquel rizo que caía en la frente, iba a ser característica de una nueva tribu urbana llamada "rockabilly" en España. Para muestra: José Mª Sanz Beltrán del grupo musical "Loquillo y los trogloditas", Jaime de Urrutia del grupo "Gabinete Caligari" o Carlos Segarra de Los Rebeldes, etc. etc. etc. Del panorama internacional, nombraré a Rick Astley, cuyo estilo de peinado "Pompadur", sería un éxito durante los años 80. Sobre todos ellos volveré más tarde.

As you could watch on the video, the two stories are very different. However, the clothes were very similar, since the boys wore black leather and the girls wore pink leather. In that period, leather jackets and skinny pants were in fashion. Forelock, that curl falling on the forehead, would be a characteristic of a new urban tribe called "rockabilly" in Spain; as example: José Mª Sanz Beltrán (singer of the musical group "Loquillo y los trogloditas"), Jaime de Urrutia (singer of the group "Gabinete Caligari") or Carlos Segarra (singer of "Los Rebeldes") and so on and so forth; from outside, I remember Rick Astley, whose Pompadour style would be a success in the 80's. I will talk about them later.

Este estilo se conseguía dejando bien corto el pelo a los lados y detrás. Arriba se dejaba más largo, con rizos enroscados en la frente. Se le ponía crema o gel para mantener el pelo. Se hizo por primera vez popular entre los hombres en los años 50 y estrellas como Elvis Presley contribuyeron a su popularidad.
This style was achieved by having the hair cut short on the sides and back. The top was left longer, with the longest strands in the front. Pomade or gel was used to hold the hair in place. It first became popular on men in the 50's and stars such as Elvis Presley contributed to its popularity.
